I read The Gunslinger when I was about 10 years old, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. All the references to the wild west, King Arthur, and the Beatles were mind-blowing. Then, when I realized it was going to take another 30 years for Stephen King to finish writing the series, I decided to wait and read the whole thing later.
Now, those 30 years have passed, and with talk of a Dark Tower movie being made soon, I decided to go back and revisit The Gunslinger. This time, all those references seemed like a messy hodgepodge. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much.
I am planning to read the second book in the series before I make any further decisions about the story because the 10-year-old in me wants to believe there’s something special in these books.
