Top Record Store Day 2017 Picks

I love Record Store Day. I spend weeks getting ready. I comb over the RSD List with a highlighter. I make notes and search for music samples online. I thin out my vinyl collection to make room and sell records on eBay to free up some purchasing funds. I watch the Bull Moose RSD Preview video to get an idea of what the packages and vinyl will look like. I wake up early and go get in line. I make friends with other music geeks, and we talk about music while the sun is coming up. We compare shopping lists.…

Love in Vain: Robert Johnson 1911-1938

Intro This is my first spoken book review. I’m not sure how I feel about this yet, but it was fun putting together. Summary This graphic novel tells about the life & times of the famous bluesman, Robert Johnson. His work has been influential to artists like the Rolling Stones & Eric Clapton. It has left a defining footprint on the world of rock n’ roll. This book chronicles Johnson’s life growing up in the rural south. It explains his womanizing, heavy drinking, and playing blues in juke joints. The book touches on Robert’s infamous deal with the devil, but…

Woody Guthrie And The Dust Bowl Ballads

To anyone interested in Woody Guthrie, I highly recommend reading Woody Guthrie And The Dust Bowl Ballads by Nick Hayes. The story is a fictionalized telling of Woody’s life and the way Hayes captures it borders on poetic. The accompanying sepia-toned artwork is as mesmerizing as a dust cloud.   Below are a few of my favorite panels.   Also, check out this video of musicians providing Hayes with a hard-driving soundtrack while he’s working on the graphic novel.       We are not beat.

The Collector by Sergio Toppi

The Collector by Italian artist Sergio Toppi is a collection of five graphic stories about a mysterious colonial character that’s a cross between Indiana Jones and Clint Eastwood. While the stories are relatively simple and fun, the pull of this book for me was the artwork. To quote from the foreword by Sean Gordon Murphy, “Never did hard drugs, but I imagine if I did then everything around me would look like a Toppi drawing: thousands of oscillating doodles swirling around like an acid trip in India ink. It’s the kind of art that makes you try to hold your…

Belushi: On A Mission From God

Belushi: On A Mission From God is a touching graphic novel biography of a comic & entertainer that left a lasting impression on me. Alberto Schiavone’s story can easily be read in one sitting, and it succinctly summarizes John’s career and touches on several of his memorable characters. Matto Manera’s fine-line art work is able to show endearing qualities and capture the chaos that I can only imagine surrounded John Belushi. This book will be on my coffee table for the next few months, and I’m looking forward to revisiting it often, as well as share it with friends. Thank…
