Purpose of the CourseBuilding Your Own Bridge training seminar aims to make a more positive classroom environment that will help teachers and students focus on their classroom instruction and learning. By working with Hall County elementary school teachers, Center Point will instruct the teachers on how to help their students cope with stress, manage relationships with classmates, and avoid conflicts. This seminar will cover four key areas:

• Reflective skills to identify emotions and intensity of emotions
• Listening skills to validate someone’s feelings
• Verbal skills to clearly communicate feelings
• Body language skills to read other’s body language and awareness of one’s own body language

Through these four key areas, the Building Your Own Bridge Seminar will show teachers how to help young students control their behavioral outbursts, get along with their classmates, and concentrate on their studies.
Audience DescriptionPrimary Audience (training will be strongly encouraged)
• K~3rd grade Hall County elementary school teachers
• Hall County school administrators
• Hall County school counselors

Secondary Audience (training will be voluntary)
• Hall County school police officers
• Hall County students’ parents
• Hall County school bus drivers & janitors

General Learner Characteristics
• Age: 22~45
• Gender: 77% female, 33% male (primary audience: 84% female, 16% male)
• Education: college educated (all read at a university level)
• Work experience: average 10~15 years of teaching experience
• Ethnicity: 72% White, 21% African-American, 6% Latino

Entry Characteristics
• Most are familiar with Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences & Learning Styles
• All have received basic training in working with young learners with emotional difficulties
• Most have a basic understanding of Group Dynamics
Major Course Objectives (Terminal)• Learners will identify emotions in themselves and others
• Learners will model verbal skills to a group
• Learners will demonstrate the accuracy of their listening skills
Course Enabling Objectives Learners will identify emotions in themselves and others
• Be able to use an emotion chart to identify (point to) emotions in oneself and others
• Be able to rank the intensity of emotions on a scale of 1~10
• Given a handout depicting various facial expressions and emotions, be able to match the expression to a corresponding emotion
• Be able to use “I” language that expresses emotions

Learners will model verbal skills to their students
• After reading a short passage, be able to summarize your findings to a small group
• Be able to apply “I” language that identifies one’s emotions in a short presentation

Learners will demonstrate the accuracy of their listening skills
• While listening to a partner tell a short story, be able to identify keywords (write down) or phrases that capture the story’s main idea
• After listening to a partner, be able to analyze the main ideas that were communicated
RLO Enabling ObjectiveGiven information about various facial expressions and emotions, be able to match the expression to a corresponding emotion
Learning Assessment for CourseThere will be no formal assessment. As this is a voluntary seminar, the assessments will self-assessments and informal assessments by partners/small groups.
Learning Assessment for RLOA drag & drop style activity will be incorporated to allow the learner to practice and assesses their progress.
Instructional Delivery method for Course (overall)The delivery for the Building Your Own Bridge seminar will be a face-to-face class. A Center Point staff member will deliver a 3-hour interactive training seminar at the beginning of the 2019 school year. At the beginning of the following semester, there will be a 1-hour, in-person reflective session for the teachers to share their experiences.
Instructional Strategy for RLOThe instructional strategy used will be drill & practice to help the learner remember the emotions and facial expressions associated with those emotions. During the practice/assessment, the feedback given will be knowledge-of-result and answer-until-correct.
MediaThe media used in this course will be a combination for clip art jpegs and simple text. There will be recorded audio to match and support the simple text.
508 AccommodationsVarious icons will be used to denote navigation help, including colored highlights. There will be sufficient contrast between text and background. Visual focus for keyboard navigation will be included. All input fields will be easily distinguishable.
Course Structure DescriptionThis course will consist of 1 unit broken into 8 lessons that will achieve the three terminal objectives.
Seat Time of CourseThe seat time for learners in the Building Your Own Bridge seminar will be approximately 3 hours.
Seat Time of RLOThe seat time for the Building Your Own Bridge RLO will be approximately 30 minutes.
RLO OutlineI. Introduce the facial expressions & emotions
a. Briefly discuss each emotional definition
b. Show facial expressions commonly associated with each emotion

II. Practice matching emotions with facial expressions
a. Use drag & drop to drag the written emotions to their commonly associated facial expression
b. Feedback
i. Feedback will be provided using knowledge-of-result, so learners know instantly if their answers are correct or incorrect
ii. Learners will answer-until-correct

Development Tools for RLOThe tools used to develop this CBT course will include the following:

• Graphics Tool: Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
• Storyboarding Tool: Keynote
OwnershipHeyward Gignilliat will develop the initial course; however, Center Point staff will own and maintain the course. They will have full authorship and retains rights to the course.
Development Time of entire course and RLOIt will take approximately 18 hours to build, test, and troubleshoot this CBT course.
Support requirements for RLO and courseStaff members from Center Point will be available to offer help and assistance as Subject Matter Experts.
