Hey Ya (Take 1)

I’ve been practicing my chord changes with C & G, so I thought I’d take a stab at a simplified version the Outkast’s song Hey Ya. My C chord continues to give me fits. It takes me about one beat longer than I want before my fingers find the right position. I want to give this tune another try in a few more weeks. There is another strumming pattern that I want to try, but it’s gonna take me some time to practice. This is the video tutorial I’m using to help me practice. JustinGuitar has been super helpful. I…

Learning Guitar: Desire (Take 1)

I haven’t been practicing with the guitar as much as I’d like to the past couple weeks, but my changes between A, D, & E have sped up, so I decided to give a simplified version of U2’s Desire a try. I still need to practice my rhythm. I can’t get the timing down with the correct up-strums and down-strums, but I’m getting closer. I need to work on keeping a steady rhythm with my right hand.     This is the video from Justin Guitar that I’ve used to help me. His Beginner’s Course has been very helpful for…

Learning Guitar: 1-Minute Changes w/ Problem Chords

Nothing like airing some dirty laundry! This is a video of me drilling chord changes with a few chords that have been giving me a hard time. The idea here is to change chords as many times as possible in the span of a minute. The chords shouldn’t be total rubbish, but the aim is to speed up the fingers and build muscle memory while worrying about accuracy later. I have discovered a small tweak that’s helping me speed my changes along. I’ve started changing the order I place my fingers on the strings. The goal is to have all…

Twist & Shout (Take 1)

Here’s my weekly guitar practice video. This week I’m taking a stab at a simplified version of The Beatles Twist & Shout. I’m beginning to see some progress with my changes between chords A, D, & E while I continue to practice up-strums and various rhythms patterns. Here’s the original Beatles version for reference. Someday in the distant future, if I’m lucky and keep chipping away at my practice, I may make girls scream like this.

This Land Is Your Land (Take 1)

This is my first take on a simplified version Woody Guthrie’s famous folk song. After reading the Dust Bowl Ballads a few weeks ago, and with everything going on in the political world now, I kinda figured this was timely practice. I’m still working my up-strum and slowly building different strum patterns. Trying to keep a steady rhythm and hitting my chord changes is plenty enough for me to think about now. Maybe one day I’ll at least start humming the lyrics.   Take ‘er easy, but take it.

Wild Thing (Take 1)

Honestly, I’m not sure if this is Wild Thing or Louie Louie, but I love them both! This is one of the first tunes I began learning on the guitar. It’s fun to play because it’s just the same few chords repeated. I’ve recently been practicing my up-strum, so I decided to give it a go on this tune. The up-strum makes this sound so much better! I still have a long way to go, but I feel like I’m beginning to see some slow progress. I still need to get a metronome to help me keep a steady…

1-Minute Changes w/ C & G

This video captures where I am with my guitar studies this week. I’ve struggled with chords C & G for months. Honestly, I got so frustrated that I put the guitar down for about a month, and I have only recently started drilling myself again. I need to speed up these changes before I feel confident enough to start learning more chords. I’m making progress, but it’s slow.

1-Minute Changes w/ Minor Chords Take 2

I took a vacation a couple of weeks ago, so I haven’t been practicing as much as I would like to be. That said, my changes between these minor chords (Am, Dm, & Em) is slowly speeding up. I feel more confident with Am & Em, and I’m beginning to get the feel for Dm. Like always, if anyone watching this has any tips, tricks, suggestions, or feedback of any kind, I’m all ears. Thanks!

For What It’s Worth (Take 2)

I’m teaching myself how to play the guitar, and I’m trying to learn a few simple songs. I’ve been practicing the chord changes for the Buffalo Springfield’s song For What It’s Worth this past week. Here, I’m really just focusing on the changes & the rhythm instead of trying to play the whole song. When I watch this, I can tell that I’m focusing on strumming the chords more evenly than last week’s Take 1. I still have a long way to go, but every week I hope I’ll get a little bit better. Please leave a comment if you have…

For What It’s Worth (Take 1)

I’m teaching myself how to play the guitar. I only know three chords, and I’ve been practicing my chord changes and trying to play simple songs. This is my first attempt at playing For What It’s Worth by the Buffalo Springfield. I only tackled part of the song and left much of it out. Feel free to watch and laugh. As I watch this, I realize that I need to practice strumming evenly across the strings, and keeping time with my right hand. Rhythm has never been a strong point for me, so I’ll try in the future with a…
